My new diaper bag!

The diaper bag scenario is frustrating. These are the options:
* use the stupid Enfamil bag you get when you leave the hospital
* throw it all in the abyss of a tote
* spend a lot of money for something sleak, yet boring, from Babies'R'Us
* spend even more money for something really cool looking

I opted for:
* make your own! just the way you like it!

When I saw the red fabric at Ikea a few months ago, I knew it was for my mom bag. I'm calling it a mom bag, b/c I made it with a long-term view, and it's useful for more than just diapers, ya know.

My new diaper bag that I made!!

It's a simple messenger style bag. With just a flap to keep it all together. I don't like to mess with fasteners, which is why I find a tote style bag appealing. But totes just don't work for this purpose right now. Everything sinks to the bottom and that's very annoying.

Here's the bag with the flap up. Lots of nice little compartments easily accessible without having to dig through the bag. Cell phone, pens, small notebook, chapstick, gum, etc.

Inside is a big pocket for a changing pad, which is just an all-purpose waterproof pad that I got at Babies'R'Us. I'd like to make a coordinate backing for it, but we'll see if I have time. I still need to get a toggle button to hold the pocket closed with the loop I already made. It's kind of floppy right now. (I envision this becoming useful for a laptop someday.)

There are three pockets on the other side where I can stash diapers and wipes and whatnot.

Watter bottle or coffee mug holders on each of the ends.

My new diaper bag!

Velcro straps on back to attach a custom food bag I have yet to make. We're always packing peanut butter sandwiches and other snacks, and it gets annoying to have that floating around the main bag.

My new diaper bag!

And I'm all about this: ties at the bottom to attach a rolled up blanket (or wrap!) for further outdoor fun.

My new diaper bag!

And that is my cool new bag. I'm totally basking in its awesomeness!!!

That is a GREAT BAG!! You are such a designer! ANYBODY could use that bag - it would be great for school! I hope you enjoy it on vacation :)

PS - if you're ever looking for a great church halfway between you and Maine, check out Immanuel Chapel in Upton, Mass.

Well done, Diber! The bag is awesome and I'm duly impressed by your mad sewing skilz.

Okay, you realize that now you have to sell them, don't you? Way too cute and practical. We're just dealing w/everything floating around the tote right now. Urgh.

That bag rocks! You are such the inspiration of craftiness. I totally want to make one for myself.

How did you make the bottom? Did you use a seperate piece or just box it out by sewing the corners of the sides? Do the ties on the bottom just get tied together when not in use? I'm curious about this picnic bag too! Great idea. Lots of questions because I want to copy your genius! And I know you didn't use a pattern did you? I know I shouldn't even ask.

I still want to make those cute baby pants with matching onesie. Cute cute. Too many things to sew, too little time.

Oh and I forgot to confess, I DID use the free enfamil bag with Alice. But hey, it was the right size and I had a newborn and a 15 month old. Phew, those were some crazy times! But I vow here and now to NOT use that bag this time around. Not when I could copy your wonderful bag!

Haha! I used the Enfamil bag with Ellis for awhile, too. I moved 1200 miles and had a baby 2 weeks later. I guess we each have a good excuse. :)

As for the bag, I used a separate piece for the bottom so that I attach the bottom ties in the seam. I majorly reinforced the seams, since they're weight bearing. Yea, and I just tie the ties up when not in use.

You can totally do this. Just think of a box and go from there.

Happy bag!!!

Jeannette, you are AMAZING! What a cool bag!

I love the fabric, and the straps at the bottom are such a great idea! I mostly like our bag from Carter's, but it has a wide flap (about 2 inches) with a zipper on either side to close it, and I HATE that part. It's always open for ease of accessibility, so the stupid strap is usually hanging out the back, dragging on the ground or whatever. A messenger style seems like the perfect solution! =)

wow, what a bag. I am also impressed by the technology of showing us the great photos right here at your blog. I did have a great diaper bag but it only lasted through one child. It had a diaper changing pad and special compartment for keepint it in, and lots of pockets inside and out. But your bag is much more strikingly beautiful.

Honestly you should sell and market those.
